Update!

My pelvic stress fracture continues. Up to 5-weeks so far of absolute total rest. Still a limp and using crutch as much as possible. The pain is frustratingly still the same with no improvement. But staying positive despite the rarity of success stories from few fellow sufferers around the world! Excellent forum here with comments from those also frustrated from lack of recovery. Hi Lizanne, I've been following your progress on Jodi's blog comment thread. I posted too (#16), and am hoping to have a success story to post after the Tokyo Marathon in 4 weeks.

I ran the Berlin 2007 with a healing pubic ramus fracture (against doc's orders and without proper training) with no drastic consequences. It's a long story, I can bore you by email if you like, but my main message is that (I think) this injury/pre-disposition can be managed AFTER IT HAS HEALED. That is, let it recover and you will be able to run again but you'll probably have to drastically change your training methods. I now swim and bike as much as I run, but am up to 30+km training runs. Fingers crossed.

My blog is www.jodiemichele.wordpress.com (about living in Japan more than running, but anyway).

Stay still now, Jodie.

Hi Jodie, thanks a lot for your kind words & advice, much appreciated. You could have wrote 20-pages of your story & experiences of this but wouldn't bore me! It has taken over my life these past 5-months so far and no one can relate or understand except for the few people like you in the world who are experiencing /experienced it.

Since you stopped exercising completely and started FULL absolute rest for this, how long did it then take before you could resume exercise again? Of course you didn't jump straight into running again but even cycling, fast walking and general daily exercise etc with absolutely no more irritation or pain?

I'm honestly doing this FULL rest strategy now almost 5-weeks so far. The irritation of it is still very much there but it’s not ‘bad’. However I'm barely ever moving nor do I 'test' it anymore to ensure constant rest. I'm limping but mainly to ensure as little weight bearing on it as possible. If I walked proper and asserted full weight on it I would definitely feel it, which would just irritate and prolong recovery again. When limping and sitting I feel the dull pain and certain movements (sitting or turning suddenly) and the presence of it is very much there even though not actually 'painful' but more of an uncomfortable ‘sensation if that makes sense? I would really love to know how long this absolute rest took you before it was completely healed?

For always staying still....
Lizanne ;-)

Hi Lizanne,

Here's what happened, as best I can remember (have never been one to keep a proper training diary, but it would have been helpful in hindsight):

Mid June 2007, training for Berlin and over-trained, had left side groin/hip flexor pain and was misdiagnosed by physio with hip flexor tendonopathy or some such thing. Treated with no running, but swimming, cycling and water running okay. Swimming was a bit painful. Also had regular massage, anti-inflammatory cream, ice, etc. This continued for four weeks, pain subsided to almost zero and I gradually started running again. I think my stress-fracture must have been a small one, as it seemed to heal well. Remember, at this point, I didn't know it was there.

Mid July - mid Aug 2007, gradually increased miles until I could do a half-marathon mid Aug. This was a big test, could I hold out for 13 miles? I did, but got this other pain in the femur on the right side after the race. Stopped running again, was sent for isotope bone scan and ruled out fractured femur, but what do you know? There's a healing inferior pubic ramus stress fracture on the left side. Confirmed by x-ray. Osteopenia confirmed by bone mineral density test (have you had one?).

Mid Aug - end Sep 07, Doc orders no running, or cycling, but water sports okay. I just kept training by swimming and running with the flotation belt. Went on a couple of sneaky runs close to marathon date (30 Sep), up to 8kms, felt okay. Was flying to Berlin from Australia specially for marathon, so I decided to just line up at the start and see what happened. Completed in 4hrs20min, with some walking involved, pain too but not that special unstable pain you feel when your pelvis is cracking up, right? Had I felt that, I would have dropped out immediately.

Sep 07 - Jan 08, Doc covers her ears when I tell her marathon result, then says still no running. I do pilates, swimming and water running. Jan 08, very, very gradual re-introduction to running. Generally pain-free, just sometimes a phantom ache for no reason that disappears as soon as it comes. Doc says this is okay, part of healing process.

2008 - running increased to half-marathon distance, but never running two days in a row. Much cross training.

Jan 09 - Went on 5 day ski trip, started feeling nagging symptoms, backed off and now better. Not sure if I'm on the knife edge, but am at least on the right side of it. Stay tuned.

So, I never had full absolute rest, like you, but I calculate five months absolute no running in total (first one month off, then one month on, then four months off), then very gradual increase. And that's for a mild fracture which healed well after the initial 4 week break. As you know, the longer you keep on it, the longer the time to heal. Mine must have been nipped in the bud.

I think you're doing the right thing now. Let go of that urge to get up and run. Sit this one out. Direct your energy into learning Spanish. Your time will come again, no doubt about that.

Feel free to hit me with any other questions. Not really sure how to exchange email addresses without broadcasting to the world - if you want, you can post your email in a comment on my blog (they don't get published immediately on Wordpress, I approve first). Or is your address somewhere on this blog? Let me know whatever you think best.

Til then, stay put.

Jodie

Hi Lizanne,
Good luck with the heavy resting. You have more willpower than almost anyone I know.

Thanks a lot Sandra. It's not getting any better unfortunately. Pain not improving after all this stupid 'REST'. Can't sit properly now either it's ridiculous! Going to get third opinion at this stage I think. Lizanne :)
